BW RO Membrane (Brackish
Water Reverse Osmosis Membrane)
A BW RO membrane, short
for Brackish Water Reverse Osmosis Membrane, is a high-performance
filtration component used in reverse osmosis (RO) systems to purify brackish
or moderately saline water. Brackish water typically has total dissolved
solids (TDS) ranging from 1,000 to 10,000 ppm, which makes it
unsuitable for direct human consumption or industrial use without treatment.
The BW RO membrane plays a crucial role in separating dissolved salts,
organic materials, heavy metals, and microorganisms from water, providing
clean, safe, and fresh water for a wide range of applications.
Working Principle
The BW RO membrane operates on
the principle of reverse osmosis, where water is forced through a semi-permeable
membrane under high pressure. The membrane allows only water molecules
to pass through while rejecting contaminants, ions, and impurities. This
process effectively reduces TDS levels, resulting in purified water.
Typically, feed water pressure
in brackish water systems ranges from 150 to 400 psi, depending on the
water’s salinity. The semi-permeable layer, usually made of thin-film
composite (TFC) polyamide, provides excellent chemical resistance and high
salt rejection while maintaining good permeability.
Construction and Material
The BW RO membrane element is
composed of several layers wound around a central permeate tube in a spiral-wound
configuration.
